Spencer Road, Chiswick

refreshed and renewed

One Spencer Road is a distinctive detached Victorian villa in the heart of Chiswick. The client required the project to proceed in two phases: firstly, internal modifications to the ground floor and basement levels, and secondly, the construction of a two storey annex to the house.

The home is situated in a Conservation Area and as such required a sensitive approach. The first phase was a complete internal refurbishment with modifications to the ground and basement floors to create open-plan family living spaces with direct access to the garden.

Connecting places and people

The second phase demolished the single storey garage and constructed a two storey annex building connected to the main house at multiple levels by a glazed link. Consultation with the local authority at an early stage of the design process established that a contemporary design for the annex building would be preferred. The resulting design takes into consideration the materiality and form of the surrounding buildings, while establishing a distinctive and individual architectural language.
